Controlling Spiders in your Home

Spiders are commonly found in homes throughout Australia. While there are some very dangerous varieties, such as the funnel web spider in Sydney and the red-back spider that should be controlled using an expert, for the most part spiders will want to go about their business and will only bite humans if they feel threatened.

Few, if any, pest controllers will try and eradicate all spiders from your home and backyard. Spiders play an important role in the ecosystem of your garden so trying to kill them all is never a good thing. Your aim should be to discourage them from entering your home in the first place. So how can you go about that?

Keeping spiders out of your home

While it might not be possible to completely keep spiders out there are definitely things you can do to make your home less pleasant for them.

Spiders are attracted to their food supplies, such as insects and bugs.

  • Keep your house clean and tidy and free from food scraps that might attract insects
  • Insects are attracted to lights, so regularly clean light fittings and avoid having outside lights turned on for long periods
  • Vacuum carpets and furniture regularly

Another thing to consider is how spiders are entering your home

  • Spiders may come in via the cracks around doors and windows, so try to ensure these are sealed correctly
  • If you've left your washing on the line a little longer than usual it may, too, have a spider or two on it so remember to check and shake your washing before bringing it in
  • The spiders may have hatched inside a web in your house. Vacuum webs and any egg sacs you see during your usual cleaning routine

Remember, the best way to control spiders in your home is to control the food supply that attracts them to your home. Keeping things clean and free of insects and bugs such as cockroaches, flies and moths is definitely a good start.
