Choosing a draftsman

When you're building a new home or an alteration, or a carport or garage, it's tempting to choose an 'off the shelf' solution, but then you'll end up with a design that's not unique.

A draftsman can provide you with plans and drawings tailored to your ideas and specifications. So if you want a new home, alteration, carport or garage that's exactly the way you have it in your mind, hire a draftsman. A draftsman can also take an 'off the shelf' solution and further tailor it, which helps keep the costs down.

Plans are drawn up using a computer - usually drafting is done on software called CADD (Computer Aided Drafting and Design). This is extremely useful as it cuts down the time it takes to tweak the plans and shows you elevations and floor plans as well as showing you doors, windows and electrical points.

A draftsman will often assist you with getting your plans and permits from the council as well, so they can be useful in terms of making sure that the process flows smoothly. They'll also be able to work in a project team with your builder, although most of the work is done before the building actually starts.

What if you want a complicated design?

Draftsmen are great at drawing up plans and the more experienced drafties will be able to advise you on the design aspect of your new building, but in some circumstances you may want to employ an architect which is a slightly more expensive option. Consider what type of tradie you need after reading this article.
