The co-founder of Service Central shares his 5 tips for business success. How do they stack up against your approach to business?
1. Have a Vision
Everyone wants to be part of something big and important. People will come together to support you achieve your vision if it is truly inspirational.
Your vision doesn’’t have to be to take over the world, however it does have to be something important. For example, no-one wants to help you be the “most average” painter, but if you’re striving to be the best Home Painter that Melbourne has ever seen then you will be amazed what support you get as you share your vision and passion with others.
2. Keep it Simple
It is essential to keep every aspect of your business simple.
Business life is hard enough, don’t make it even harder by creating complex products or processes. Effectively, if you can’t explain something in a sentence, then its too complicated.
Your business success relies on people being able to explain to others what you do. For example, customers often consult others before buying from you, so it is essential they those hearing about your business second hand can easily grasp what you do.
Related to this is the saying “A confused mind doesn’t make a decision”. So its essential that you do not confuse.
3. Experiment
Experiment, ExperimentBusiness is a science, and a scientist doesn’t progress unless he/she is conducting new experiments every day.
Try something new, track the results. Try another thing, see if the results are better.
At Service Central we’re always experimenting. In fact, one side experiment led us to a marketing technique that yielded results over 1,000 times more effective than anything we’d tried in the past. If it wasn’t for putting 5% of our marketing budget towards this crazy side project, we would never have found it.
4. Build a Business Model and Love your Numbers
You can’t manage what you’re not measuring.
So, build a business model for your business and pay close attention to all of the assumptions that you’ve made. Some of the numbers in your business model might include how many prospective clients you are going to see, how many are going to convert into real paying clients, and of those clients how much they are going to pay you and how often.
Once you have your business model, you need to track your real results and measure them up against your plan. You will be amazed to learn how different your plans can be from reality.
The facts will in turn give you the power to make important strategic decisions for you and your business.
5. Embrace Rest
Business is a marathon and not a sprint. You are creating a legacy for yourself and your family. Work hard, but don’t over do it. If you don’t embrace rest, and find a way to have regular breaks and holidays, then you and your business will quickly become stale.
