3 Home Renovation Ideas With A Twist

Overwhelmed with paint samples? Trying to decide between 50 hues of kitchen tile which all look the same? Home improvement can be funner than you might think - and there are plenty of wacky remodelling ideas which you might fall in love with in spite of yourself. Here are three unusual elements to consider for your next renovation - and don’t forget, Service Central is a one-stop shop for renovation needs, with plenty of professional contractors waiting to give you quotes.

1. Trees which grow indoors

If you like complexity and planning, this is the remodel for you. There’s a lot to think about in terms of soil preparation, root work and sunlight exposure, but when indoor trees work, they work really well, creating a luxurious and sophisticated atmosphere whilst incorporating a bit of the good old fashioned great outdoors! Integrating a tree into a house design - or rather, constructing a house specifically around a tree as a focal point - is especially popular in Asia. For example, take Hiroshi Iguchi’s Camouflage House, a greenhouse residence built on the philosophy that human beings also need light to flourish. Elok House in Singapore is so green, it’s like a sanctuary for tropical plants! Yes, maintenance would be a bit problematic and let’s not get caught up in technicalities of mould, mildew and leaf litter. Let the dream remain!

2. Floors which you can see through

Welcome to the new generation feature wall - the feature floor! Sure, you might startle a few uneasy guests - but transparent flooring is pretty damn cool. It’s a great way to provide light to wine cellars, libraries and storage areas and can make a real statement when executed well - like highlighting a little basement or a patio under the swimming pool! Frosted for modesty or segmented into chessboard squares, the sky’s the limit when it come to design. Architecture firm Taller 6A even renovated a library in historic building La Ciudadela in Mexico City to feature glass floors for the books! ‘Vertical House’ by Atelier FCJZ takes it even further, compensating for the tube-like cement tower’s lack of windows with a fairly epic display of interior glass - it's enough visibility to make your innards squirm! Limited glass floors, however, make a quirky and modern addition to a home with a bit of personality.

3. Homes which rotate on their axis

Not getting enough natural light into your home? Annoyed you didn’t think to put in windows facing north? What you need is the ultimate solution to bad house positioning - the rotating house! That’s exactly what the Everinghams have done with their residence in NSW - the Everingham Rotating House TM has the power to spin a full 360 degrees around its plumbing and electrical base. The rotation is controlled via an internal panel which includes options for programming seasonal patterns in rotation, such as following the sun. Certainly, this is a drastic remodelling idea - but think about the views and the savings in heating and cooling!
