Smeg dishwasher not progressing to next cycle.

6 year old SMEG Dishwasher stopped working. Didn't even fill with water. We can manually progress it through to another stage in cycle, e.g. rinse... but this is not consistent either as sometimes it doesn't start at all, while other times it does. Prior to this happening, it failled to heat the water properly (this happened once or twice).
