My maytag machine wont start when I turn the knob to start and press start

When I turn the knob to the cyle I want to wash and press the button to start nothing clicks to indicate that the machine will start.It just flashes the lights to indicate want I want it to do but it refuses to start any cycle at all and I have tried several different cycles just to make sure.That is all I can detect.
