Dometic rm36e caravan gas electric fridge, not working on gas.

we have inherited a 1976 viscount caravan, with the original fridge, a dometic rm36e gas/electric, approx 36 years old. the fridge runs fine on electricity, but we just cannot get it to run on gas. last year i could get the pilot flame lit, but only while i had the knob pulled right out, as soon as i released it, out she went. today, theres the piezo ignition burst, and thats about it.
i have disconnnected the main gas line and there is gas getting to the fridge. i then disconnected the pipework on the right side and no matter what position the knobs were set at, no gas flowed through. as this is such an old fridge we are hoping it can be repaired.
