Poor reception: advice on upgrading antenna/cabling needed

We watch digital TV and have poor reception at times. The worst is channel 10, followed by SBS. We are located in North Melbourne, ("in the shadow of the CBD?"). Our antenna seems to be reasonable quality, but advice on this is needed. It is on the roof at the back of a two storey house. Maybe an amplifier is required?
The TV is a long way from the wall socket and currently we have average quality cable run around a doorway. Perhaps the socket needs relocating, but it may be difficult as the floor is boards that can't easily be lifted. Thanks for your advice!
