Preventing Termites in your Home
Author: Service CentralTermites are well-known here in Australia for their ability to chew their way through all of the wood in your home. A small white insect that lives in massive colonies and typically nests in tree stumps, living trees or the space under buildings, termites will travel up to 50 metres from their nest to reach a food source, generally via burrowing underground or through wood, however when this isn't possible they create visible 'tunnels' along the object or wall's surface.
Termite prevention measures can be put in place during the construction of your house, however for added protection or if you live in an older home that has no termite barrier in place, you can follow these simple tips:
- Termites will require a ready water supply so find and repair any water leaks you may have inside or outside of your home.
- Store firewood or any building materials a good distance from your house. Any wood that touches the ground is highly likely to be discovered by termites.
- Clear any dead trees or old wood stumps from your yard
- Ensure that food sources such as branches, wooden ladders and so on, aren't left leaning against your house.
- Wood mulch, damp garden beds and ponds are all attractive to termites - if you live in a high risk area consider termites when planning landscaping.
- Check your foundations for cracks and other termite entry points and patch where necessary.
- Keep your home well ventilated, including the attic and underneath the house if you live on stumps. This can help to prevent moisture.
- Have your house regularly inspected for termites and check yourself for any flooring that feels 'soft' or solid wood work that sounds hollow when tapped. The earlier termites are detected the better.
